Fifteen(ish) years ago, as teens the world over were spending every spare minute on the now-defunct MSN Messenger, emoticons were born.
An entire generation learnt that all you had to do to flirt was add a winky face to the end of a sentence, and that any insult had to be forgiven as long as it was followed by, "jk lol :-P"
Emoticons have come a long way in that time. No longer do we have to restrict our emotions to those that can be portrayed using the characters on our keyboard.
