Mornings are hard work, especially for students. This is why breakfast is the the most important meal of the day, as it's the only hope of luring us out of our cosy bed burritos and into the learned world.

Oats will answer all your morning problems, they release energy into your bloodstream at a much slower rate than sugary cereals. This means you'll feel fuller for longer and more energized. Oats are also super cheap so it's a win-win situation.

These sweet and savoury recipes will transform your humble peasant porridge into a breakfast fit for a king (or a hungry student).

The Full English

This recipe works just as well without the bacon for veggies.

Ingredients

1 large free range egg

2 rashers of free range bacon (optional)

pepper, to taste

brown sauce (optional)

Method

Whilst your porridge is in the microwave, poach or fry your egg (and bacon if using).

When the egg is ready, place it on top of your porridge. Cut the bacon into strips and sprinkle over, add some pepper and/or brown sauce.

Apple Pie Porridge

Ingredients

½ a green apple

cinnamon, tsp

brown sugar or honey, 2 tsp

Method

Grate or finely chop the apple and add to the porridge before microwaving.

Cheese and Marmite

Ingredients

cheese

Marmite

(Pause for laughter)

Method

Add a teaspoon of Marmite to your porridge post-milk but pre-microwave. Microwave for 1-2 minutes whilst you grate your chosen type of cheese. Top your porridge with cheese and grill at a medium heat until melted.

Exploding Purple Porridge

So-called "Exploding" because the berries will burst in the microwave and create an intriguing purple smush.

Berries tend to be in a 2 for £4 deal at most supermarkets, which seems a bit pricey, but will only cost 40p each day for a week. If you’re really strapped for cash this month, go for a seedy fruit jam instead.

Ingredients

natural yoghurt, 2 tsp

blackberries and/or raspberries, handful

or jam, tbsp

Method

Add the berries or jam before microwaving your porridge for around 2 minutes. Then swirl the yoghurt through.

Peanut butter and banana

A fruity take on the American PB & J – try to find an unsweetened peanut butter for the best sweet and savoury combination.

Ingredients

1 banana

peanut butter, tbsp

Method

Slice or mash the banana then add to your porridge with the peanut butter before microwaving.

Inventive Indian

For this one, use water, coconut milk or vegetable stock instead of normal milk.

Ingredients (serves 2)

tomatoes and/or carrots, chopped

½ onion, finely chopped

turmeric powder, ½ tsp

chilli powder, ½ tsp

garam masala powder (optional), tsp

coriander leaves, tsp

coconut, grated, 2 tsp

garlic, 1 clove

pepper, ¼ tsp

Method

Boil the carrots and peas for a few minutes. At the same time, dry roast the onions, garlic and coconut for a minute, then add the oats and roast for another 2 minutes.

To the oats, add the cooked vegetables, water (or alternative), chilli powder, turmeric, and garam masala (if using). Cook at a medium heat for 3 minutes – allowing the mixture to boil - or until the oats becomes soft.

Use a ladle or masher to mash the mixture (dependent on preference). Cook for 2 more minutes until it reaches your desired porridge consistency.

Garnish with the tomatoes and pepper.

Fruit and Nut

Ingredients

nutella, tbsp or a few squares of chocolate

raspberries, handful

hazelnuts, handful

Method

Chop the hazelnuts finely or roughly, depending on how much you like to crunch. Add to the raspberries and chocolate before microwaving for around 2 minutes.
