#MaybeHeDoesntHitYou is teaching us something important about domestic abuse

It isn't always a textbook case.

When someone says 'abusive relationship', it's all too easy to think of the textbook scenario - boy hits girl, right?

But as a new hash tag on Twitter is reminding us, abuse has many faces, not only physical.

The hash tag #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou started on Twitter on May 2, when Twitterer Planet Thickness highlighted one of the many forms of abuse; coercive control.

And, resonating with others across Twitter, it quickly caught on.

From displays of anger and jealousy, to insults and gaslighting, contributors to the hash tag have been giving the world a very important reminder - that abuse comes in many forms.

Your partner may threaten to kill themselves, wear down your self esteem - then tell you they love you the next moment, no violence involved.

And how it can wear you down until you question your own mind.

So remember - domestic abuse doesn't always involve bruises.
