Shed Simove seems to know what's up. He has built a novelty gift empire and is making big bucks selling publications such as What Every Man Thinks about Apart from Sex, which made the Guinness Book of Records for containing 200 blank pages.
Now the former TV producer and professional money-making machine is sharing his secrets in a new book, Success...Or Your Money Back. And this time, there are actual words inside.
“One of my huge drives in life is to come up with new ideas and then make them happen. Anyone can make it big,” Shed says.
Here is a little teaser of Simove's pearls of wisdom:
1 Everyone is a charlatan
All adults are bluffing. I’d previously thought that successful people had a secret plan which made them better than others, but I quickly realised that they’re just like everyone else, except in one area: They try things.
2 The four words you must get used to
When you’re trying to get something done, there are four words that always crop up: “No!” and “It’ll Never Work!” Avoid these and instead focus on working out ways your plan CAN work.
3 The amazing WCS system
When you’re having doubts about trying something new, ask yourself: “What’s the worst-case scenario (WCS)?” You not only force your mind to consider the risks, but you’ll also be mentally prepared for any challenges.
4 They lied to you
Want to be successful? There is no such thing as luck. Luck is often used as an excuse by people who want to give up. Luck is a myth and you can control pretty much anything.
5 Be ‘the evolving chameleon’
Here’s a secret that’s so beautiful in its simplicity that it should be called a work of art. a) Watch what everyone else is doing. b) Learn from these people and note what works and what doesn’t. c) Do something slightly different.
6 Two neat tricks for motivating yourself
There are always reasons why it’s not a good time to start something new. So tell yourself: “There is no yesterday, it’s gone. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. There is only today.” “Trick” yourself into believing that the first day you actually start making your idea come to life will be the last day you’ll be a total novice in that area.
7 How to get rich (fairly) quick
There are two secrets that may help you focus your endeavours:
a) Find out what turns you on.
b) Follow a passion. Your passion for a certain area will drive you to overcome challenges and seek solutions. So find something that excites you.
8 Failing upwards (or please, please fail)
Trick your mind to look forward to mistakes, so when one happens, you can say: “Great, I made a mistake – that means I’ve just learned one more lesson.”
9 The only thing men do better than women
The art of self-promotion. All adults are essentially bluffing their way through life – and with a bit of preparation and fake confidence, you can too. Learn how to push yourself forwards as a “brand”.
10 ‘Negnets’ and how to avoid them
There are certain people who are like magnets for negative energy or “negnets” for short. So, when you’re trying to get an idea off the ground, identify any negnets in your life and try to avoid talking to them about your goals.
11 Avoiding these three emotions will help you
During your journey towards success, it’s natural to go through a range of emotions. Some emotions might not be so beneficial, though… Rudeness, jealousy and anger. Keep an eye out for these and realise the possible effects they can have.
12 'FOC it!’
FOCUS what you choose to spend your time on each day.
OPPORTUNITIES are everywhere and you must learn to recognise them.
CHOICES are what happen when you create more than one opportunity.
13 The 33 per cent rule
Roughly 33 per cent of people will love what you do. Roughly 33 per cent of people will hate what you do. Roughly 33 per cent of people will not care what you do. No matter what you produce, not every single person will ever agree that what you’ve done is amazing.
14 Treat your life like an experiment
This trick immediately re-frames everything you do, because experiments never fail. They always produce results.
15 The drunk life
Imagine what you’d be like if you made your decisions as if you were drunk. We all know that drinking alcohol makes most people much more fearless, impulsive and spontaneous. And those traits are the same ones that can often lead to exciting adventures and achievements being reached.
16 Be inspired in an instant
Inspiration can come from anywhere, so harness your “a-ha” moments by quickly writing them down. That way, you can come back to them and decide which ones to set in motion.
17 What’s your ‘boiled egg’?
In San Francisco I came across a shop selling boiled eggs for fitness fanatics using the gym nearby. The shopkeeper had not only cared about his original customer (he was sensitive enough to boil an egg for the original gym-goer), he’d also then had the presence of mind to consider whether other fitness fanatics would also love a boiled egg as well. A business was booming! Soon, you may very well find your next “boiled egg”.
18 The ASIA method
Amaze, Shock, Inform, Amuse... These rules should be applied to any endeavour. If you’re not doing at least one of these four, then it’s likely you’re just repeating something that’s gone before and people won’t engage with it.
19 The art of chunking
Break up an enormous goal into smaller, more manageable chunks, because then it becomes much less daunting – and therefore seems much more achievable.
20 The Ultimate Secret
The biggest secret to success... All that matters is action. The only way you definitely won’t achieve anything you desire is by not starting to make those desires happen. My simple assertion to you is that... Action always provides results.
